The Everyday Superhero

Are you sure you don’t know any?

Ring! Went the bell. Yes! Another school day complete. Yesterday (or what feels like it, though chronologically 10 years ago…) after watching an Avengers Superhero movie in English class (which our teacher Mrs. Pelil allows us watch on a Friday afternoon after completing our work) I began to ponder as I walked home on what it was that I had just been watching.

As I began to munch on the candy in my hand that Mrs. Pelil had happily supplied me in exchange for doing my homework I thought, ‘Did I know any superheroes?’ Let’s see…. No, I didn’t know anyone with super powers, a perfect smile, or with superhuman athletic prowess… No I did not know anyone that could use their superheat to send the school up in flames permanently… I so wished I did though.

That place was unbearable. If Mrs. Pelil wasn’t my teacher, I don’t think I’d even bother dragging myself out of bed in the morning. She was funny, smart and she managed the impossible. Dare I say it? She managed…to make… Learning…fun (Scratch tongue vigorously at this point). I suddenly stopped in my tracks. Maybe I did know a superhero.

My teacher Mrs. Pelil looked on the outside like an average woman for all the world to see. Yet, to the class of 7G and I she was a legend! So to you, the school children of Hurstville, Sydney Metro, Australia, I send this article to the internet, in the off chance that you do find it, to let you know how awesome my teacher was in the seventh grade.

Now I want you all to have a think. Do YOU know any superheroes? No? you probably do. Its just that all the superheroes are undercover. They’re not going to tell you, of course. They’ve got to protect their identities you know (such that super villains don’t hurt the ones they love). But you might even be looking at one right now. Has your teacher ever spent her lunchtime break , giving you feedback on that test you flunked because you were too busy playing that MMORPG(Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) online? Has your dad ever woken up at 5 o clock just to make sure you make it in time for that Saturday sport final game that you so can’t afford to miss? They probably have haven’t they?

And so that’s it. The end of the this article. Or the beginning of a dozen more. See…maybe superheroes aren’t as scarce as we’d like to think. Next time you see the janitor clearing out science lab B304 that you and you friends just trashed in a wild spontaneous fit of laughter, the second the teacher left the classroom when the Bunsen burner wouldn’t light up your 250ML beaker for exactly 15 minutes on safety flame ( You’ll get there one day, Hopefully maybe sometime before your HSC) Don’t forget to thank him, hey, maybe even send in an article like I’m doing right now . HE COULD BE A SUPERHERO. Sometimes you just never know. You see, a superhero isn’t someone who lifts weights and flies around in tights the rest of the day looking for trouble. A superhero is someone who combats trouble when it finds them. A superhero is someone, who like Mrs. Pelil, makes the unbearable, bearable.
